Bonefish
Hot Head Buggs are our best selling bonefish jigs. They imitate a spawning shrimp and a mantis shrimp. They're designed with a fuller profile to look like a bigger meal. Bonefish love them! They always land hook point up, look alive in the water, and shed grass with the help of a weed guard. Start here for sure.
Loco Buggs also imitate shrimp, and they have a slimmer profile. Inspired by the Crazy Charlie bonefish fly, this is another super effective bonefish jig. Lands hook point up, every time, and comes with a weed guard.
2nd Gen. Bitty Buggs imitate small crabs, and really look alive in the water thanks to the wider profile, legs on each side, and trailing claw. Probably our second most effective bonefish jig, and one you should definitely keep in your box. Lands hook point up, every time, and comes with a weed guard.
Puff Buggs are the smallest profile bonefish jig we offer. Sometimes the want something tiny, with just a puff of materials, and that's where this one comes in handy. The other day I heard from a customer who went to Belize, tied on a Puff Bugg, and never changed jigs because everything ate it! Lands hook point up, every time, and comes with a weed guard.
Flats Buggs are our second best selling jig overall, and our most versatile for bonefish. You can fish them three ways. First, right out of the package. The rabbit collar, rabbit wing, and grub tail produce fantastic action. If you want something more subtle, simply remove the grub. You'll have an effective small shrimp or crab imitation. Finally, if the fishing is really tough, remove the grub and tip the jig with a little bait. You've traveled that far, and I wouldn't blame you a bit for making it almost impossible for a bonefish to refuse. Lands hook point up, every time, and comes with a weed guard.
The new Permit Adams Buggs and the future Kimani Crab Buggs will definitely both get eaten by bonefish. They're bigger crab patterns, tied on the same jig heads as the ones I mentioned above.
How to choose which one to start with? If you're on a guided trip, ask him which one he would start with. If you're fishing solo, I'll echo what so many customers have said over the years. Hot Head Buggs in Natural have accounted for more Bonefish than any other Bugg. My final piece of advice would be to match the color(s) of the bottom where you're fishing.
These last two have been very pleasant surprises for me and my customers. Bonefish love them!
Click-Bait Shrimp imitate small shrimp and are super weedless. They land softly and work great both blind casting and sight casting. You have to keep them moving, however. I prefer a straight retrieve when casting to feeding fish, and to mix in twitches when blind casting.
Click-Bait Minnows imitate glass minnows and are super weedless as well. They land softly and work great both blind casting and sight casting. You also have to keep them moving. I prefer a straight retrieve when casting to feeding fish, and to mix in twitches when blind casting.
It's hard to beat the thrill of sight fishing for Bonefish. These jigs will give you the best chance for success, and I hope you'll give them a shot!
